My concentration focuses on shape and repetition found within architecture. I was inspired by the variety of skyscrapers in New York City and the abstract style of photographer Louise Millman. By exploring the concept of macro photography, I took photographs that make the building unrecognizable. This allows the viewer to focus on line and shape.
Each photograph progresses by bringing the viewer closer to the simplicity and form of the buildings. The most difficult part of this process was finding the unique features in each building. Photo 1 inspired me to continue exploring the idea of repetition because of the number of buildings I saw in one frame. I continued taking more photographs searching for consistency in style. This led me to pieces 3 and 6 because of the repetitive shape seen by the windows. Pieces 8, 10 and 11 are strong examples of line both vertically and horizontally organized. Throughout the process I noticed many full frames and felt I needed to take a step back and show more negative space as seen in pieces 4 and 6. Pieces 7 and 12 show asymmetrical balance both vertically and horizontally. The vertical asymmetry in piece 12 is seen by the blue tones on the left and reflection of the sky and trees on the right creating balance in visual weight. Though all the photographs were not taken in New York City, each image comes together to represent unity.
